Godfrey Reunion - September 1988The morning of September 25, 1988, brought thunder, lighting, and rain to our Grape Creek Community near Murphy, N.C. We needed the rain for our failing springs and wells, but did not want it to prevent anyone from being at THE GODFREY FAMILY REUNION! Finally, Bill and I got the food and camera loaded into the car and began the drive to Ball Ground, Georgia. I scribbled corrections to the cousins' address list on small pieces of paper while Bill did the driving. We were many miles into Georgia before I finished writing and could observe the scenery. The wet roads ended, the clouds and fog lifted, and miles and miles of mountain beauty surrounded us on the new scenic highway. Red leaves of the dogwood, blackgum, sourwood, and sumac were bright along the way--with a touch of gold in the poplar trees. The new highways made the trip easier and faster, but I missed seeing the by-passed towns that evoke memories of other journeys and visits with friends and 'kinfolk.' Elsie, Arthur, Roy, and Lenora were in the Community Building when Bill and I arrived at 11 A.M.---with everything setup and waiting! Arthur and Roy recalled earlier reunions when Daddy (Lee Elbert Godfrey) would get to Grant Park by 8 A.M. and have bottled soft drinks buried in tubs of ice when they arrived. That memory was a fitting memorial for Daddy whose Birthday is September 27th. Cleo, Judy, and Grace were the next ones I saw. I kept passing out the "correction slips" and getting signatures on my list of people present. I learned I had left a cousin off the address list--Arch Heard. His wife, Arah lives in Canton, GA. It was exciting to greet each person. I loved this gathering of the clan. It was food for my soul as we waited to eat our fill of favorite food from the laden table. I am hoping the joyful mood was captured on snapshots we took before our clans separated and left for home. Our names are listed in the order of signing:
* Grandchildren of "Elbert" Cisney and Martha (Mattie) Carolyn Godfrey. [See Elbert Cisney Godfrey.] Grandma Godfrey died November 29, 1941 and we think the first Godfrey Reunion was Labor Day weekend the following year. Reunions were held at Grant Park in Atlanta until the past two years at Ball Ground, GA. Plans are made for the 48th. Godfrey Reunion to be held in the Community Building at Ball Ground, GA. on September 24, 1989. Hope to see you then! It is great to share food and fellowship with all our Godfrey 'kin' and friends!
