Brother No. 5 of 5
Dawson County, Ga.

by Mattie Lee Dilbeck

William W. Dilbeck and Willis Dilbeck was listed as the same person on a document of 1-06-1872 in Dawson Co. GA that helped to get a widow's pension (War of 1812) for Mary Hampton Dilbeck.

Cassa and 2 sons were back in Wm. W.'s home 1860 Census (Dawson Co., GA.). 1870 Census? She married (TN.) Blackman (Black) L. Shirley in 1871

* Dawson Co. was formed in 1857 from part of Gilmer and Lumpkin Counties and is the same location as the1860 "Gilmer District" and the !870 and 1880 "Cut Off District" ( Faucett Lake).

There are no records of the GA Census taken in 1890.

William Willis Dilbeck's Second Dawson County, Georgia Home Place and Land:

Wm. W. Dilbeck bought land lot #1224, 5th. District, Section 1 on 7-4-1873.

W. W. Dilbeck was listed in the "Cut Off" District when the census was taken on June 23, 1880.

Wm. W. Dilbeck willed Land Lot #1224 and Lot#1, District 4, Section 1 to Debby Ann on 12/20/1880.

William W. Dilbeck and these lots were listed on the 1874, 1876, 1884 and1886 Tax Records of Dawson County in the "Amicolola District".

Wm. W. lived on this Land Lot #1224 when he died Oct. 22, 1887.

Debby Ann Dilbeck sold the above two lots to W. L. Prince on 8/09/1899. (W B. Dilbeck's name is recorded as a witnesss).

William Batis Dilbeck, wife and six children still lived at that home place when the census was taken in 1900. (The census recorded that Batis rented this 133 acre farm).

The census listed them in the "Yellow Creek" District. (Lot #1 is in the "Yellow Creek" district. Lot #1224. is in the "Amicolola District".)

Willie Franklin Dilbeck drove his father, Batis, to see the old home place about 1933. Batis wanted to visit his parents' gravesite. Bill Green told me on 7/12/1980 that his grandmother, Mary Manervy Dilbeck told him that both W. W. Dilbeck and Debby Ann were buried at their home place back in Dawson County, GA. Batis and Mary Manervy had two infants also buried there.

On 8/26/1978, Clifford Chastain told Willie F. and Mattie Lee Dilbeck that he lived on the Batis Dilbeck Home Place. He led us to his home and then on to the abandoned Dilbeck Cemetery on Cantrell Rd. It was 4/10 miles behind his house.and had 2 or 3 mounds among the young trees. Mr. Chastain said there had been 5 or 6 unmarked graves earlier. Several years later he again led us back to that site and no mounds were left.

Mrs. Chastain brought to me 15 deeds they had in their home. I hand copied the lot numbers, names, and dates from each one. That gave added proof that this was indeed Batis Dilbeck's home place and the land once owned by W. W. Dilbeck, willed to, and sold by, Debby Ann Dilbeck.

On 5/13/91, Willie F. Dilbeck and I drove to Dawsonville, GA to help set the Civil War Marker at W. W. Dilbeck's gravesite on Cantrell Rd. on his old home place and that of Batis Dilbeck. We wanted it to be setup before The Dilbeck Reunion in June 1991.

Bannister's Funeral Home filed for, and obtained, this marker for us. They used the Civil War Records on W. W. Dilbeck that we had paid the U.S. Government to search for and send to us.
